The National Trust has announced its shortlist for Victorian Tree of the Year. Whist no Nillumbik trees made it to the shortlist this year, we still reckon we’ve got some beautiful specimens in our neck of the woods and we’d love to show them off.

The final draft of Nillumbik’s Neighbourhood Character Strategy, an extremely important document that will guide new development ensuring it respects and responds to the existing or preferred valued features or character of our area, i.e. what we know and love, is out for review.

When the Fitzsimmons Lane roundabout was removed many thought the feeling of ‘coming’ home through to Eltham was gone forever.
But the people who objected to that work came up with a proposal to ‘renew’ publicly owned land to create a new entrance. Discussions were had with Major Roads Projects Victoria, Council and Vicki Ward MP who conducted a survey of residents to see what people would like to form a new Gateway entrance into Eltham.

Council is reviewing another major planning document – the Municipal Planning Strategy (MPS).
A high level document, the Municipal Planning Strategy provides the overarching strategies for the major land use and development matters that affect the whole shire into the future.
“The vision, strategic directions and strategic framework plans provide the ‘big picture’ response to the opportunities and challenges facing a municipality.”
Council wants our input by 17th July through a short survey on Participate Nillumbik or by personal submission.

Forty four trees will be lost!! Almost one tree per two car spaces!
Did you complete the LXRP (Level Crossing Removal Project) survey regarding Eltham Station Carpark upgrade in September 21?
Well, unless you told them to remove 44 trees, they have taken next to no notice of you, Nillumbik Council, ECAG, and other community groups.

After a full-day public hearing last February, and weeks of consideration, a panel of the Heritage Council recently formally announced it had rejected the appeal spearheaded by ECAG to have the Eltham War Memorial complex of buildings included on the Victorian Heritage Register. A disappointing result, but the process has delivered three benefits.
