Eltham War Memorial Buildings: A Lost Appeal but a Victory of Sorts

Many people have emailed Vicki Ward MP outlining their concerns regarding the Fitzsimons Lane roundabout removal and the destruction of our iconic treed entrance.
The standard reply they are receiving includes feedback from Major Road Projects Victoria stating that residents have been consulted and that the Eltham Community Action Group design fails to adequately address some features that are required to resolve the traffic flow issues in peak hours.

Eltham Community Action Group (ECAG) is reaching out to you because 2900 people signed a petition to the State Government in 2019 horrified at the proposed removal of the Fitzsimons Lane Eltham roundabout and hundreds of trees yet their concerns do not appear to have been taken into account.

Without any consultation since March 2020 and under the cover of the COVID-19 lockdown Major Road Projects Victoria (MRPV) has been finalising the design and preparing to build a massively overdesigned signalised intersection at this site.

Trees not in designated Bushfire Prone Areas safe from 10/30!

ECAG has long been concerned about the indiscriminate use of the 10/30 bushfire exemptions which has led to clear felling of many urban Eltham blocks by developers who took advantage of the exemptions to remove vast numbers of trees for purposes other than bushfire mitigation.

ECAG is no stranger to VCAT but before its eventual conclusion this week, a recent matter led to an ECAG first, an online VCAT hearing.

Following ECAG’s nomination of the Eltham War Memorial Buildings for inclusion in the Victorian Heritage Register, we are disappointed that the Executive Director of Heritage Victoria has made a recommendation that the buildings should not be included.
